The state of Oaxaca has 342 miles of coastline with extraordinary beaches and breathtaking sunsets. Some beaches are worldwide recognized for having the best waves for surfing in Mexico, being home scenarios for national and international competitions. Most of the coast towns are small and very peaceful places with a simple and traditional lifestyle.
The largest ethnic population of all Mexico lives in Oaxaca, where half of the inhabitants still speaks an indigenous dialect. The local native people have kept alive their identity practicing ancient traditions. Sixteen different indigenous groups have been formally declared, all well defined through dialect, food habits, customs and rituals.
Oaxaca is plenty of archaeological sites, being the most popular Monte Alban and Mitla. Other sites worth mentioning are Yagul, Lambiteco and Dainzu. Oaxaca tours are available everyday, departing from the capital city. The capital city is also characterized for having a lot of festivals, celebrations and parades, where the mix of dances, songs and costumes reveal the identity value of the local communities.
