Palenque is located in the middle of the jungle and it is one of the most representative archaeological sites of the Maya culture. With more than two hundred structures of different size and complexity, Palenque is a testimony of a great civilization that was political and socially organized. It is located close from Villahermosa, and today it has been transformed in an symbol of archeological tourism in Mexico.
According to investigators Palenque was founded about 100 B.C. and had an important development until 900 A.D. During many centuries Palenque was the city which controlled a vast region of the Maya influence, where today are the states of Chiapas and Tabasco. Before the first millennium of our era ended, Palenque was abandoned by its population and within some centuries the jungle completely buried this amazing pre-Hispanic city.
One of the main buildings is the Temple of Inscriptions, which has three enormous walls on the inside with Mayan hieroglyphic inscriptions. Also in this temple you can see the grave of King Pakal, considered the most spectacular sample of America.
