Being the world’s 14th largest country by total area, the different mountainous landscapes make climbing in Mexico a very attractive activity. The highest cliffs in Mexico can reach as high as 2000 feet above sea level. Because the country is crossed by the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a large portion of central Mexico is located at high altitudes. The Mexican volcanoes provide the perfect training ground for high-altitude climbing, some peaks are still waiting to be conquered and new challenging paths are traced all the time. Some of the climbing areas in Mexico have lodging service at the base or near the peak of the mountain.

The best places to experience mountain climbing in Mexico are:


Loreto has ideal geographic conditions for climbing in Mexico, where numerous peaks, canyons and cliffs could be found. The Giganta Mountains have the best spots, located 30 Km. south of Loreto. 


Veracruz has The Orizaba Mountain which is the highest mountain in Mexico and the third highest mountain in North America reaching a height of 19,000 feet above sea level. This is a very popular Mexican climbing spot among intermediated and advanced mountain climbers.


Puebla is surrounded by volcanoes that provide the perfect settings for mountain climbing in Mexico, including lodging facilities. The city’s perspective from the top of the mountains is beautiful and unforgettable.

The Malinche volcano has a height of 14,721 feet above sea level, the Popocatepetl volcano reaches 17,958 feet above sea level and the Iztaccihuatl volcano peak is at 17,226 feet above sea level.


The best spots for climbing in Villahermosa are Agua Selva and The Sierra Madre State Park. The Agua Selva is a 2,000 hectares natural reserve covered by jungle vegetation with many cliffs which are ideal for rock climbing. The Sierra Madre State Park has various hills which are good locations for beginners.


Toluca has two national parks with mountains offering a wide variety of climbing conditions and diverse difficulty levels. The Insurgente Miguel Hidalgo National Park has rocky formations and high peaks for challenging climbers. The Nevado de Toluca National Park has peaks of various altitudes being the highest of 15,041 feet above sea level.


The eighth largest volcano in Mexico is located in the state of Veracruz; tours departure everyday from Xalapa City with local guides offering their services for mountain climbing. The most visited natural area of the region is the Cofre de Perote National Park with an area of 11,700 hectares covered by mountains.

Valle De Bravo

Valle De Bravo is a small town with a beautiful scenario for mountain climbing in Mexico. The town is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Temascaltepec, Tenayac and Valle de Bravo. The best spots for climbing in Valle De Bravo are La Peña, Peñon del Diable and Monte Alto reserve.
